Narrative
James COOK arrived in Australia from England with his parents Edward COOK and Margaret MOSS, aged 10 years and spent his entire life in the service of the Permanent Way (railway).
He grew up in an environment of track laying and would barely have noticed the transition between child helper to adult employee.
James arrived in Australia, aged 10 years, and spent his entire life in the service. His period of service commenced at the age of 15 in harsh conditions.
Working along side his father (Edward COOK), he was involved in laying track.
His years of service spanned an almost impossible period of time, where blue-prints drawings were an almost impossible dream, became the reality of trains on tracks streaming across the state.
From an unpaid juvenile water lackey to a navvy, a fettier and other positions he achieved the rating of Sub Inspector of Permanent Way Redfern in **** and then inspector at Orange in 1900 at the time of his very early death.
An extract from, a newspaper obituary: "To show the high respect and esteem in which the late JAMES COOK was held, a number of establishments in Parkes closed on Monday and draped their windows in black"
