Narrative
The Samarang arrived at the river bar at sundown on Tuesday, and yesterday she was visited by the Health Officer, who passed her, and the passengers will be brought up to town to-morrow by the Kate. Captain McKenzie has not arrived in Brisbane, but we have been able to gather the following particulars from different sources. The passage has been a long one of 112 days from the time the Clyde pilot left the ship. In the early portions of the passage the vessel met with fair winds, and, generally speaking, fine weather, and had a prosperous and rapid run of 49 days to the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope. Then her good fortunes deserted her, and for 18 days she had to contend with strong easterly gales, during which she made but little progress. In running the easting she went as far south as the 52nd parallel, and in that latitude she saw several icebergs, some of which were of great size. Off the Australian coasts she again met with unfavorable winds, and has been seventeen days from the South West Cape of Van Deiman's Land to Moreton Buy. On the whole, however, the voyage, so far may be considered a prosperous one, as no casualties of a serious nature have occurred. The passengers are about 400 in number, and among them are included about 30 single girls from the Shetland Islands. A considerable amount of sickness and debility prevailed during the passage, but happily no disease of a contagious or infectious nature appeared. There were eleven deaths, one adult and ten infants.
Several of the most delicate passengers were brought up to town last evening by the Emma, steam yacht. The only saloon passengers are Mrs. McKenzie and family, and the surgeon and his wife and family. We are informed. that the
ship is in excellent order and remarkably clean, both on deck and below.
