VERDICT OF SUICIDE.
Html code
LITHGOW. Monday. Following an inquest the coroner found that, William Thomas Sheppeard met his death from the effects of cyanide poison, self-administered. Cyril Sheppeard said he saw his father place a small packet to his mouth. His father had only one arm, and it was his invariable practice to open packets with his teeth. The coroner said that much as he would like to presume that the poison might have been accidentally taken through deceased opening the packet with his teeth, the evidence indicated that the substance had been taken deliberately. MR. W. T. SHEPPEARD'S
DEATH EVIDENCE AT INQUEST A verdict that deceased died from the effects of cyanide poison wilfully self-administered, was returned by the coroner (Mr. Bamber) at an inquest on Friday into the death of William Thomas Sheppeard (62), of Oakey Park. Death occurred in the hospital last Monday. Dr. English said when deceased was brought to the surgery his son Cyril handed witness a packet and said, "I found Dad eating this stuff." Deceased was taken to the hospital and died about two minutes after admission. The symptoms were consistent with deceased having taken cyanide About five grains was a fatal dose, and death could take place almost immediately. Witness thought deceased had taken more than five grains. The records of such cases showed they wore invariably fatal. Const. Fallon said he accompanied Cyril Sheppeard to a mound of dirt in the yard at deceased's home. Cyril said his father sat down at that spot, and ate something from a small parcel. When he collapsed, the son had him taken to the doctor and hospital. Witness said he knew the family, and all its members were of good character and highly respected citizen IN GOOD SPIRITS Cyril Sheppeard, a miner, said he first saw his father about 8 am. on Monday, when deceased was in good spirits. Witness saw him again between 2 and 2.30 pm, when deceased got out of a car and remained home for ten minutes. He next saw him in the park at Oakey Park about 2.40. Returning to that spot shortly after witness induced his father to come home. This was at 3.30, and deceased had a conversation with his wife. He then walked up the yard, and sat at the back of the stable. Witness followed him, and then went back to the house to secure a chair. On returning he noticed deceased put a small package to his mouth. Before he could reach, the spot his father had fallen from a sitting position on to his side. In 1932 deceased met with a mining accident which resulted in his right arm being amputated below the elbow. Subsequently a further portion of the arm was removed. USE OF TEETH Witness added that from the time deceased lost his hand it was his in variable habit to open or untie packets with his teeth. He had spoken of doing some prospecting and poisoning foxes and dingoes at Mt. Cameron. Thomas. Rushton, an unemployed resident of Corney town, said he had previously worked with deceased near Mt. Cameron, when they were poisoning dingoes and foxes. On March 10 he met deceased in Main-street when he asked witness to accompany him to Mt. Cameron on a prospecting trip. Deceased, referring to the poisoning of foxes and dingoes, said he had something better than strychnine for this purpose. In recording the verdict the coroner remarked that much as he would have liked to presume that the poison might have been taken accidentally through deceased opening the packet with his teeth, the evidence indicated that the substance had been taken wilfully. It was possible deceased was worried by the loss of his arm. The coroner extended his sympathy to the family which he knew as a highly respected group of citizens. MR. W. T.
