Pioneer Industrialist
Dies At Orange
A Cullen Bullen resident, who was the first employee to be engaged at the old Newnes Shale Oil Works, in the Wolgan Valley passed, away on Sunday at the Orange hospital aged 87.
He was Mr. Alfred Charles Sheppeard, who was born at Dargan's Creek and had lived in the Central West all his life.
Well known in the Cullen Bullen district, where he eventualiy settled,
he could relate many tales of the early days of the district, his father being the toll collector at the Mt. Victoria Gates for many years.
It is still known in the archives of history as "Sheppeard's Toll.
He is survived by two sons, Edward (Queensland) and Roy (Cullen Bullen),
two daughters, Ivy (Mrs. R. Brady, Cullen Bullen), and Ruby (Mrs. R. Douglas, Concord),
12 grand children and 10 great grand children.
