Narrative
Leaving By Plane For Sydney
86-YEAR-OLD MT MORGANITE
MT MORGAN. Tuesday.
At the age of 86, and a resident of Mt Morgan for 60 years, Mrs Elizabeth Cheetham Atkinson, of Rockhamppton Road, will leave by plane for Sydney in company with her son, Mr. T. Atkinson, with whom she will spend her declining years. Mr. Atkinson holds a responsible position with a Sydney engineering works.
Born in Roster (Lincolnshire, England). Mrs. Atkinson and her husband came to Queensland over 60 years ago. Landing in Rockhampton they shortly afterwards came to Mt Morgan, where her late husband found work with the Mt Morgan Company.
Mr. Atkinson died about 15 years ago.
Mrs Atkinson states that in the early days in Mt Morgan the life was rough, especially for those who had just came out from England. But through it all they were happy, and though the wages paid by the company were small in comparison to the present time, every one was able to acquire their own homes, live well, if plainly, and pay their debts.
Mrs Atkinson's eldest son (Steve) lost his life in France during the Great War just after he had received his commission. Prior to the war he was a metalurgical chemist, employed by the Mt Morgan Company. Mr. T Atkinson, who is taking his mother to live with him in Sydney, also served in the Great War. Mrs. Atkinson had a number of daughters, of whom only Mrs A. Waters, of Mt Morgan, is living.
Although the old lady is thrilled at going up in the air for the first time, she is sad at leaving Mt Morgan and her many old friends.
