Narrative
"TO-MORROW WE LIVE."
Associated British Film Distributors present uneven entertainment In the Conquest production, "To-morrow We Live." GodfreyTearle and Haidee Wright are excellent in the leading roles, and there are moments when the picture reveals polish, a good atmosphere of drama, and some acceptable humorous episodes.
Had the production been handled in the brilliant manner of "Millionaire for a Day"for there Is something similar in both films "To-morrow We Live" would have been a satisfactory picture. As it is, the script is often poorly written and the film weak and foolish.
The story concerns the whim, and its consequences, of a city magnate, Sir CharlesHendra . (Godfrey Tearle).
About to commit suicide on the eve of his financial crash, he decides to invite to dinner twelve other people who, feeling that life has definitely beaten them, are also prepared to die. He collects them by an advertisement in the daily press, propounds his idea to them, offers them £50 apiece, and begs them to give one more day to the consideration of their fate, with the£50 to do that day the thing they have most wanted to do. Only the subsequent reactions of four or five of the guests are shown. Some of these sequences are interesting and fraught with tragedy.
Others are crudely done and most unconvincing. Eliot Matcham, Sebastian Shaw, Fred Withers, Theft Holme, and Jessica Black are good in their roles, but not distinctive enough to give tension to their sequences.
This is partly their fault, but mostly that of the scenarist and producer. (Mayfair Theatre.)
