Narrative

At the age of 5, Mary Ann Philips, born Islington, Middlesex, UK immigrated to Australia with her mother Harriett. According to shipping papers her father William PHILIPS was deceased and she was accompanied by her mother Harriett. Harriett PHILIPS had remarried Richard SHELDRAKE, a labourer, born Ermington, UK c.1831 and he died in Sydeney 1898. Both Richard and Harriett were 25 years when they arrived in Sydney on 22nd April 1856 on board the ship Maitland, under the assisted immigration act 1856-1859

Narrative

Mary Ann PHILIPS married John COOK in Lithgow on 23rd September 1870, witness to the ceremony were her stepfather Richard SHELDRAKE and Ann COOPER. By 1890 Mary Ann and John had twenty-two (22) children within 20 years of marriage, the earliest ones came into the world living in a mobile camp along the construction route of the railway track. In the harsh conditions and without the assistance of medical aid it would of been heartbreaking as their babies were lost in infancy, and this condition was to bring a great deal of sadness to their family as it continued. In total, of the 22 babies to John and Mary Ann, 6 died in infancy; 6 males and 4 females a total of 10 died in childhood and only 6 survived. Of the surviving children 3 boys in Bowenfels where Richard Edward was born 1873. George 1874 and Arthur James 1875 all born in a railway tent as the line forged every onwards to Bathurst were it opened in 1876. By 1890 Mary Ann had delivered 20 babies with in 20 years of her marriage. this paragraph was taken from the yellow book written by Patti McDonald 1988

PROBATE JURISDICTION.— In the Will of MARY ANN COOK late of St. Peters near Sydney in the State of New South Wales widow deceased. APPLICATION will be made after fourteen days from the publication hereof that Probate of the last Will of the abovenamed deceased may be granted to Thomas Henry Keep and Richard Edward Cook the Executors named in the said Will and all notices may be served at the office of the undersigned. And all persons having any claims on the said estate are requested to forward particulars of the same to the undersigned within fourteen days GEORGE BOURNE Proctor for the Executors McCallum chambers 91 Elizabeth street Sydney.
